Ablation

Refers to the removal or destruction of tissue, typically through methods like surgery, laser, or radiofrequency energy. It’s commonly used to treat abnormal growths, tumors, or malfunctioning tissues, particularly in procedures for cancer treatment, cardiology (such as to correct irregular heartbeats), and neurosurgery.

Debridement

A surgical procedure that involves the removal of dead, damaged, or infected tissue to promote healing in wounds, burns, and ulcers. Debridement helps reduce the risk of infection and encourages healthy tissue growth.

G - I

Hemostasis

The process of stopping bleeding during surgery. Hemostasis can be achieved through various techniques such as clamping, cauterizing, or applying topical agents to control blood flow and minimize blood loss during a procedure.

J - l

Jejunostomy

A surgical procedure that creates an opening from the skin to the jejunum, a part of the small intestine. This opening is typically used for feeding in patients who cannot consume food orally or have difficulty with digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract.

M - O

Observorship

A period during which a medical professional, often a student or international doctor, observes clinical practices in a healthcare setting without directly participating in patient care. Observerships allow participants to gain exposure to specific specialties, such as surgery or neurology, and learn about healthcare systems, techniques, and protocols through firsthand observation.

P - R

Pneumonectomy

The surgical removal of an entire lung. This procedure is often performed to treat lung cancer or severe lung disease when less invasive options are not viable.

S - U

Urethroplasty

A reconstructive surgical procedure to repair or reconstruct the urethra. Urethroplasty is typically performed to treat urethral strictures (narrowing of the urethra), which can cause difficulty in urination.

V - Z

Z-plasty

A plastic surgery technique used to improve the functional and cosmetic appearance of scars by rearranging tissue in a Z-shaped pattern. Z-plasty can help relieve tension on a scar and improve mobility in areas like joints or skin folds.

A 501(c)(3) is a nonprofit organization recognized by the IRS as tax-exempt because it operates for charitable, educational, scientific, or similar purposes. Donations made to 501(c)(3) organizations are often tax-deductible for the donor, and the organization itself is exempt from federal income tax.
